Water: The New Blue Gold? The blue water cycle – the water that flows in rivers, lakes and groundwater – has been disrupted beyond sustainable limits, and is the sixth planetary limit (out of nine) to be exceeded. Despite water occupying 70% of the Earth’s surface, only 0.7% is available for human consumption and activities. This scarcity makes water a precious resource. Urgent action is needed to ensure the quality and availability of water for all living beings and to restore the natural cycle.
