Gathered at the initiative of ChangeNOW, 300 stakeholders from the impact and economic world are calling for overcoming divisions and positioning ecology and planetary boundaries as fundamental principles upon which society must build and organize itself, for a sustainable future.

In a constantly evolving world, where challenges are multiplying and becoming more complex, ecology is often perceived as an additional constraint, a moral luxury reserved for some or for times of prosperity. Not only is this view reductive, but also dangerous. It artificially pits ecology against other fields such as agriculture, industry or the economy, as current events remind us. As if protecting our environment required us to sacrifice everything else.

However, ecology from the Greek “oikos” (house) and “logos” (science), is none other than the science of our common home, the framework in which all life on earth is governed. It is intrinsic to every aspect of our existence: moving, producing, consuming, are all ecological acts because we are always operating within the limits of our living world. Ecology concerns everyone. It touches on all aspects of our daily lives, impacting our common existence and our economic system. As such, it is intrinsically political.

With nearly 50% of the global population heading to the polls in 2024, it is crucial that environmental issues are neither overshadowed nor exploited. Rather than using ecology to sow division and discord, it is imperative to realize that it forms the shared foundation on which we all depend.

Ignoring ecological principles risks becoming ‘out of touch,’ disconnected from the physical realities that frame our existence and widening the social divide caused by the consequences of climate change. Science teaches us that every action has its effects, and ecology applies this principle to all living beings and our interaction with them.

It is therefore imperative to adopt planetary boundaries as a guide for our development. Not as a brake, but as a necessity to build a sustainable, fairer future that leaves no one behind.

It is in this spirit that we, entrepreneurs, leaders, investors, members of NGOs, activists, experts, artists, athletes and citizens from all walks of life, will gather in large numbers at ChangeNOW from March 25 to 27 in Paris around concrete solutions, to transcend the sterile confrontation between ecology and progress, and demonstrate a common commitment to building a sustainable and more humane world.

In a world that pushes us to polarize, to divide, threatening the very existence of our democracies, two elements unite us all: ecology and humanity. Ecology, as the science of our common home, because it defines, like a physical law, the framework in which we live. Humanity, because it defines, like a moral law, what we all are.

It is time to consider ecology not as a constraint, but as the foundation of our common future.

An opinion paper signed by 300 players from the impact and business worlds, brought together by ChangeNOW.

CHANGENOW LAUNCHES ITS FIRST IMPACT REPORT

Dear ChangeNOW Community and beyond,

As we reflect on six years of remarkable journey, it’s with great enthusiasm and a sense of responsibility that I introduce our inaugural Impact Report. In this ever-evolving landscape, our commitment to collecting, communicating, and sharing impactful actions has never been more crucial.

ChangeNOW has been witness and participant in the profound global shifts over the past six years. Now, it is our duty to articulate how we operate at the heart of this transformation. Hence, the inception of our annual Impact Report, a tradition we aim to uphold each year.

In our early days, when we started it with Rose-May Lucotte and Kevin Tayebaly, ChangeNOW’s primary mission was to identify the most promising solutions and mobilize resources and funding around them. Today, while we continue to deliver on this crucial mission, our impact transcends our initial objectives and it is this path of doing more that we aspire to tread in the years to come.

When we speak of doing “more,” it encompasses a spectrum of actions. We support transformations within large corporations, assist investors in fundraising endeavors, influence legislative changes, shape the trajectory of higher education, and alter individual life courses. Most importantly, our impact lies in uniting and engaging a multitude in a vision of a world that inspires hope—a vision we tirelessly work to bring to life.

This inaugural edition of our Impact Report aims to illuminate and showcase the unwavering commitment exhibited by the entire ChangeNOW team. It is a testament to the collective dedication that propels us forward.
Thank you for being part of this transformative journey.

Warm regards,

Santiago Lefebvre, Co-founder & CEO of ChangeNOW

Finding Hope Amidst Entrenched Interests:
Sandrine Dixson-Declève shares her insights on COP28 outcomes.

After 10 days of active engagement in Dubai, Sandrine Dixson-Declève, Co-President of The Club of Rome, reflects on what happened at COP28 for the ChangeNOW community, highlighting small victories but also the urgent need to reshape international climate governance.

What does this COP mean for the future?

Well, it exposes the dysfunctionality of our international governance system. The struggle for an ambitious deal is obvious, mainly due to entrenched interests in our economic models, especially the powerful fossil fuel industry making it hard for us to transition out of fossil energy.

The main headline is that we fell short on the phase-out of fossil fuels. But there were positive outcomes regarding land use, food, and a deal on the loss and damage fund. However, the allocated funds (500 to 700 million) are a mere pittance compared to the colossal profits of energy companies (2.8 billion per day).

While there have been a few positive developments, there’s also been a lot of grumbling and a growing realization that we must adopt a different approach. Myself and leaders addressed our concerns by writing a letter to the UNFCCC and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, stressing the imperative need for reform. The current format, with massive trade shows attracting 100,000 people, is proving to be a distraction from the crucial ambition required in negotiations.

As a collective, and particularly myself, we are committed to advocating for COP reform. This effort will persist not only in Azerbaijan next year but also emphatically in Brazil. The Brazilian government is already exploring alternative methods. The envisioned changes include a stronger infusion of scientific input, smaller and more focused meetings, a heightened emphasis on implementation, and additional efforts on putting in place the capital flows that we need to make this transition a reality.

Cercle-de-lumiere-changenow

Is the reference of a “transition away from fossil fuels” a first step towards a post-fossil fuel world?

No, it’s far too light. Furthermore, even if we collectively placed our hope in Sultan al-Jaber, COP28 President, and took him at his word, the transition was a good way forward.

However, the very next day, shockingly, he declared that the UAE would persist in extracting fossil energy. This sudden announcement, made without a delay of 10 days or even a month, shattered our collective optimism. We had all wanted to believe that the transition was a positive step forward.

The cynicism displayed by the host country, signaling their continued focus on fossil energy extraction, turned the negotiations into a mockery. It became crucial for us to comprehend the flaws in our governance system, allowing the hijacking of the entire process by one or more countries. Saudi Arabia initiated this, with support from other OPEC nations, aiming to block and implement a veto due to the absence of a qualified majority.

Simultaneously, observing the events at the UN level regarding Gaza and the actions of the US, this situation has become a stark symbol of the broken international governance system. That is why I sit on the new Climate Governance Commission alongside Mary Robinson and Johan Rockstrom, and other leaders in science and former decision-makers. We are fervently calling for new types of governance methods to ensure that we can meet the challenges of the 21st century starting with climate change, but also conflicts like Gaza, Ukraine, and other significant conflict zones.

"The goal is to shift from a singular year-end milestone to distributing focus across the year, identifying intervention points and aligning them with clear narratives and objectives to achieve our decarbonization goals."

Sandrine Dixson-Declève, Co-President of The Club of Rome
Cercle-de-lumiere-changenow

Can governance systems change within a year, or is it a longer process?

So, I believe we’ll likely have to wait until Brazil. Many are considering skipping the next COP, given its association with another Petro State. There is a conversation that the UN will be reaching out and thinking through setting up an advisory board on COP reform. So I’m hopeful that over the next year, we will start to see a real shift.

With Azerbaijan assuming leadership, there’s potential for Germany’s involvement, fostering essential meetings throughout the year to build momentum for a comprehensive stocktake and more significant decisions at the subsequent COP.

Realistically, though, many of us are focusing on Brazil. I’ve gleaned insights from the Brazilian presidency, indicating their intention to separate substantial stakeholder engagement and the grand trade show ambiance. Hosting 100,000 people physically in the Amazon is logistically challenging. Consequently, negotiations will likely be distinct from large meetings involving non-state actors.

Whether in Brazil or elsewhere, facilitating exchanges between progressive non-state actors and governments, injecting necessary science, remains essential, while cautiously managing entry points to prevent undue lobbying influence.

Cercle-de-lumiere-changenow

If not attending the next COP, what's the plan for 2024? What is your vision of the main actions and milestones for the next year?

I see several crucial milestones on the horizon.

Firstly, it’s imperative to connect the Biodiversity COP with the Climate COP. The last Biodiversity COP in Montreal, Canada, exceeded expectations with remarkable ambition. It’s crucial to intertwine biodiversity and climate goals, urging those of us on the outside to press leaders for clear commitments in both areas.

Another key focus is navigating the challenges during the ongoing election cycle in the United States and Europe. Europe, once a leader in fossil fuel phase-out deals, faces resistance against the European Green Deal. Advocates working strategically with governments must support European leaders in maintaining their ambitious stance.

Similar challenges loom in the United States during the Trump versus Biden election cycle. We must remain vigilant not to lose sight of these discussions, ensuring progress isn’t slowed down precisely when acceleration is needed.

Additionally, attention must be directed toward regional climate events like the Climate Week in the US, the regional African COP, and initiatives in Asia and Latin America. The goal is to shift from a singular year-end milestone to distributing focus across the year, identifying intervention points and aligning them with clear narratives and objectives to achieve our decarbonization goals.

"At COP 28, despite some moments of despair, I also witnessed the resilience of our collective spirit. It's also a reminder that together, in radical collaboration, we stand stronger against entrenched interests that seek to maintain the status quo."

Sandrine Dixson-Declève, Co-President of The Club of Rome
Cercle-de-lumiere-changenow

On a more personal level, what keeps you optimistic for the future?

What unfolded during COP was truly fascinating—a genuine collaborative effort among key organizations, including the Club of Rome and myself, rallying around crucial messages and responses.

One notable achievement involved bringing scientists together to counter a significant rumor that science did not support fossil fuel phase-out. In just 48 hours, we collected thousands of scientist signatures debunking this claim, an unprecedented accomplishment.

A joint initiative with business leaders, the “We Mean Business” declaration, united CEOs, various organizations, investors, and asset owners behind a fossil fuel phase-out deal. Similarly, the non-proliferation treaty gained momentum, forming part of a groundswell.

Remarkable collective action, including thousands of signatures, materialised through the coordination of WhatsApp groups and grassroots efforts. Encouraging support from women’s groups, exemplified by ‘SHE Changes Climate’, and a wider community of men and women provided a crucial lifeline in moments of despair.

The outpouring of love and support from diverse groups—men and women—during moments of despair underscores the resilience of our collective spirit. It’s a reminder that together, in radical collaboration, we stand stronger against entrenched interests that seek to maintain the status quo. This optimism stems from our ability to come together swiftly, realizing that the strength lies in collaboration, transcending individuals and organizations.

ChangeNOW and 17 Sport, joined by new partner Fair Play For Planet, elevate the Sport Sponsors Climate Pledge with enhanced targets and broader collaborations.

In a significant update to the Sport Sponsors Climate Pledge announced in May 2023, ChangeNOW, the key facilitator of the ecological and social transition, in collaboration with 17 Sport and now joined by Fair Play For Planet (FPFP), reinforces its commitment to revolutionize the sports industry’s approach to climate action and calls sports sponsors to strengthen their climate commitment ahead of Olympic Games.

The Sport Sponsors Climate Pledge, a commitment to correlate sponsorship with reduced emissions for the first time, presents an urgent call to action for sponsors to actively adopt and embrace science-based targets. By aligning their support with emissions reduction, sponsors can play a pivotal role in propelling the decarbonization of the sports industry by directing capital towards leading climate-friendly organizations within the sports ecosystem.

Enhanced targets for a strengthened climate commitment

After the initial commitment from international sport sponsors EDF, Orange, Accor, and Sodexo Live! to the Sport Sponsors Climate Pledge, its implementation unfolded through comprehensive consultations with a diverse range of stakeholders. This inclusive process engaged corporate sponsors, clubs, federations, and institutions such as l’ADEME. Consultation underscored the need to integrate extra-financial performance metrics within the sports industry.

In response, the Sport Sponsors Climate Pledge updates include:

  1. Climate Transparency and Certified Environmental Policy for Partners: Effective immediately, the pledge calls on all sports organizations, including clubs, federations, competitions, and event organizing committees, to demonstrate climate transparency. This involves implementing a certified environmental policy and committing to carbon emission reduction objectives aligned with a target of limiting global warming to below 2°C, in accordance with the goals of the Paris Agreement. These targets must be validated over a two-year period with a mutually agreed-upon certifying third party.
  2. Introduction of Carbon & Environmental Performance Indicators: In future contracts, signed two years or more after committing to the pledge, two key performance indicators will be mandatory:
    1. A Carbon Performance Indicator: For sports organizations with a turnover equal to or above €40 million/year, a substantial (10% or more) part of the total sponsorship amount will be correlated with the right holder’s certification of a carbon reduction plan aligned with the Paris Agreement.
    2. An Environmental Performance Indicator: Similarly, a substantial (10% or more) part of the total sponsorship amount will be correlated with the right holder’s implementation of a certified environmental policy.

“Shifting gears in the sports industry is a significant and intricate process that demands time and commitment. The Sport Sponsors Climate Pledge establishes the right targets, providing a practical approach to addressing non-financial performance within sponsor-rights holder relationships.” added Stuart Wareman, SVP of Sponsorship, Events and Experiences for Accor.

Expansion of ownership and collaboration with Fair Play For Planet:

In a strategic move to broaden the impact and reach of the Sport Sponsors Climate Pledge, Fair Play For Planet has joined ChangeNOW and 17 Sport as the third carrier of the initiative. Fair Play For Planet, initiated by former international rugby player Julien Pierre, introduces the first eco-responsible label for sports clubs, venues, and events. This collaboration aims to set higher standards for environmental performance in the sports industry.

“ChangeNOW is dedicated to being the platform that effectively bridges the gap between economic, ecological, and social challenges. The Sport Sponsors Climate Pledge, developed in collaboration with 17 Sport and Fair Play For Planet, and through consultation with all stakeholders, stands as a powerful tool that interconnects these dimensions. This initiative establishes a virtuous circle, empowering the most committed sports clubs and federations to secure enhanced funding.” shared Kevin Tayebaly, co-founder of ChangeNOW.

“Being Purposeful is about more than just acting responsibly but rather finding ways to leverage one’s resources, influence and ecosystem to help solve important social and/or environmental challenges while also delivering positive business outcomes. Progressive sponsors are starting to leverage their influence with sports properties to encourage them to start contributing in a more meaningful way toward building a sustainable future for the world. 17 Sport is very proud to welcome Fair Play For Planet as a partner of our impactful initiative.” added Fabien Paget, CEO and cofounder of 17 Sport.

“Fair Play For Planet is proud to join the Sport Sponsors Climate Pledge as a partner alongside ChangeNow and 17 Sport. We are convinced that the sports transition will not happen without the commitment of the sponsors that support it. The implementation of indicators in sports partnerships will enable them to direct their investments towards sports organizations committed to protecting the environment and reducing their carbon footprint.” adds Julien Pierre, Founder and CEO of Fair Play For Planet

Paris, France – Tuesday, November 7th 2023 ChangeNOW, a key player and facilitator of the environmental and social transition, is organizing the seventh edition of the world’s largest event dedicated to solutions for the planet. The ChangeNOW summit will take place from March 25 to 27, 2024, at the Grand Palais Éphémère in Paris, bringing together 35,000 entrepreneurs, investors, businesses, policymakers, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), thought leaders, media, talents, artists, and citizens from around the world.

At the halfway point of the United Nations’ 2015-2030 sustainable development goals, and following COP28, the context of 2024 is particularly crucial. In this context, ChangeNOW positions itself as a space for concrete action and innovation, uniting all stakeholders to accelerate the environmental and social transition by offering practical solutions and facilitating international collaboration.

The key objectives of ChangeNOW 2024 are as follows:

  • Select and help accelerate 1,000 solutions with high potential for positive environmental and social impact.
  • Bring together 1,200 investors and facilitate the raising of 1.5 billion euros in funds to finance these solutions and the transition.
  • Promote international collaboration by gathering representatives from 120 countries.
  • Mobilize 10,000 French and international businesses as well as engage and equip 2,000 business leaders for their transition.
  • Inspire the 35,000 participants so that each one becomes a driver of change, regardless of their level of commitment.

To achieve these ambitious goals, ChangeNOW will introduce new initiatives in 2024, including:

  1. An exhibition of solutions related to today’s and tomorrow’s challenges: The exhibition space will consist of 14 areas covering major issues related to environmental and social transition, such as energy, agriculture, biodiversity, circular economy, sustainable cities, inclusion, among others.
Two new areas will be introduced this year:
The first is dedicated to “first responders” where institutions, startups, businesses, or NGOs are innovating to provide first aid, emergency relief, and solutions to populations (access to water, education, energy, etc.) in conflict zones and/or climate risk areas.
The second will offer a new vision of sport, focusing on sustainability and inclusivity, just a few months before the Olympic Games.
  2. A platform for debate ahead of the European elections: ChangeNOW invites party leaders and project leaders to debate and collaborate in favor of the environmental transition.
  3. ChangeNOW will host the COP15 Desertification Presidency event: High-potential solutions, funding, and international diplomatic support will be brought together to combat desertification.
  4. A public evening event: The event will open its doors to the general public with an evening event on Wednesday, March 27, from 4 to 9 PM, allowing everyone to get involved in the transition.

These 2024 innovations will be complemented by the fundamental elements of the event, which have effectively contributed to accelerating the environmental and social transition since 2017. Key elements include:

  • The gathering of global leaders of change.
  • The Finance for Change program, aimed at investors with the goal of directing more capital toward the impact ecosystem.
  • A delegation of 30 French and international mayors will gather at ChangeNOW to identify sustainable solutions for cities, accompanied this year by The Club of Rome, represented by its co-president, Sandrine Dixson-Declève.
  • The Women for Change program, with the announcement of the winners of the ‘Women Shaping Our Future’ campaign, which rewards and highlights 25 women who will have a significant positive impact on the world in the next decade.

“ChangeNOW is the convergence point for all forces of change: entrepreneurs, investors, transition leaders, policymakers, and citizens. It’s a window for concrete action to accelerate environmental transition, highlighting over 1,000 solutions with significant potential impact that we commit to support and accelerate. When these solutions are combined, they offer a glimpse of a more responsible world.
Companies, in particular, have a leading role to play in this transformation. These three days provide them with the tools and solutions to achieve their transition goals.”

Third edition of the ChangeNOW - Les Echos START ranking ranking of the schools most committed to the ecological and social transition.

ChangeNOW and Les Echos START, in partnership with Deloitte France, have unveiled the third edition of their ranking of the schools most committed to the ecological and social transition.

Alongside the ranking of schools, a barometer open to universities and higher education establishments has been set up to help them measure their state of ecological and social transition.

A new academic excellence

In a context marked by multiple crises and increasing uncertainty, with historical statistical models now outdated, there is a pressing need to prepare future professionals to adapt, innovate and meet the challenges they face. It is against this backdrop that ChangeNOW and Les Echos Start thought up and renewed the ranking for a third edition, positioning it as a benchmark for students looking for clearer information and as a guide for institutions.

"With this unique ranking, we want to make visible a new academic excellence, in a context of ecological urgency. The aim of this tool is to restore young people's confidence, guide them in an uncertain world and give them the keys to transform it,"

Santiago Lefebvre, President and founder of ChangeNOW

Methodology

For this 2023 edition, the ranking brought together a total of 61 higher education establishments, including 26 business schools and 35 engineering schools. The assessments cover all areas of training, and are not confined to courses specialising in sustainable development.

"When it comes to the ecological and social transition, measurement and monitoring are key to enabling the younger generation to make an active contribution to meeting the greatest challenge of our time. That's why the Echos START editorial team is proud to highlight this ranking of schools produced with ChangeNOW, which after three editions is proving to be a powerful tool for informing students and transforming higher education establishments"

Julia Lemarchand, editor-in-chief of Echos START.

Based on a questionnaire sent to schools and universities, the 61 respondents were independently audited on six families of criteria by Deloitte France’s Sustainability teams.

  1. The integration of impact issues into the programme.
  2. The strength of the Alumni network in the impact sector.
  3. Governance training and the institution’s CSR strategy.
  4. Diversity and equal opportunities.
  5. Involvement of student associations in impact issues.
  6. Employability and academic excellence.

The ranking methodology (available on request prior to release) has been optimised in consultation with student organisations such as the Pour un Réveil Ecologique collective, to ensure that the criteria are more concrete, verifiable and meaningful. The new factors taken into account include:

  • The existence of a skills reference framework integrating the ecological and social transition.
  • The use of indicators to assess former students who enter high-impact professions.
  • Carrying out a carbon audit, assessing the extent of its scope.
  • Training teachers and administrative staff in the challenges of ecological transition.

"Deloitte is delighted to support this ranking of schools for the third year running. Every day, we measure the growing importance of these issues, both for our clients and for our employees, and we are delighted to see more and more schools joining this ranking."

Catherine Saire, Sustainability Partner, Deloitte

Results

The podium by category was as follows:

  • Business schools: 1st – ESSEC Business School; 2nd – ESCP Business School; 3rd – IESEG
The 2023 ranking of business schools has a few surprises in store. ESSEC Business School remains in first place for the second year running. However, ESCP Business School has made a strong comeback, moving into second place, followed by IESEG in third. The top ten places reflect strong competition, with significant movement among the schools.

  • Engineering schools: 1st – Centrale Nantes; 2nd – Ecole Centrale de Lyon; 3rd – MINES NANCY
The rankings for engineering schools show some notable changes. Centrale Nantes moves into first place, closely followed by Ecole Centrale de Lyon and MINES NANCY. Several schools have also entered the top 10, illustrating the evolution of the sector.

The transition is everyone's business: ChangeNOW and Les Echos START are launching a pilot barometer for all universities and higher education establishments to measure their state of ecological and social transition.

Like a nutri-score for higher education, the barometer is designed to enable all schools outside the ranking category to measure their level of ecological and social transition. Four schools took part. They include Institut Supérieur de l’Environnement, BESIGN The Sustainable Design School, Université Paris Dauphine and Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3.

The average score for the barometer is 55/100, reflecting a momentum towards transformation in higher education institutions that needs to be consolidated.

Embark on Your Impact Journey!

Are you at a crossroads in your professional life? Perhaps you’re looking for more purpose, more impact, and more fulfillment in your career. The world is changing, and with it comes an opportunity to be a part of something greater than yourself. A career in impact could be your chance to make a tangible difference in the world while aligning with your strengths, values, and aspirations.

If that’s the case, then the Impact Job Fair by ChangeNOW on October 12th is where you need to be!

As we approach the Impact Job Fair let the stories and the messages from the session ‘Preparing for a Career in Impact’ at ChangeNOW 2023 inspire you to begin your own journey in the world of impact.

You have what it takes

Feeling unprepared for a career in the world of impact? You’re not alone.

Surprisingly, a survey after our previous job fair revealed that 25 percent of applicants hesitated to embark on their impact journey due to perceived lack of training. But here’s the secret Rose-May Lucotte, our Chief Operations Officer at ChangeNOW, wants you to know: “Hard skills aren’t the primary entry ticket to this realm. In fact, it’s the soft skills—like passion and dedication—that truly pave the way for growth and transformation on your path”.

Kristy Drutman, Co-Founder of the Green Jobs Board, agreed. She knows the incredible power of adaptability, passion, and curiosity as the foundational stones of a fulfilling impact career. “We’re looking for people who can adapt, who have passion, and who ask questions,” she said. It doesn’t matter if you’re not super technical; having these qualities can open doors to places that want to make a difference.

However, the Impact Job Fair also provides a unique opportunity to discover how to acquire those essential hard skills. Many organizations will be present to guide you on your journey, offering programs that bridge the gap between your soft skills and the technical expertise required in various impact fields.

Organizations such as On Purpose, Ticket for Change, Les Pépites Vertes, MakeSense, and others, can help you develop the concrete skills needed for a career in impact. These organizations understand that while soft skills are vital, technical knowledge is equally important. They offer insights, resources, training programs, and inspiration empowering you to find your place in the ecological transition whether that be by changing jobs or changing things at your workplace.

Additionally, if you’re looking for more in-depth training, they will be there too: Ecole Polytechnique Executive Education, INCO, l’IÉSEG, and EMMIE.

Impact's Three Pillars

Angel Prieto, Haut Fonctionnaire of Pour un réveil écologique, lays down the blueprint for every aspiring impact architect: it’s all about the head, the heart, and the body. With understanding (the head), purpose (the heart), and potential (the body), you hold the keys to stepping into your role as a change leader.

“We can all become those leaders of change that we need.” – Angel Prieto, Haut Fonctionnaire, Pour un réveil écologique

Ready to Join?
